The Uprising of Podcasts

After reading chapter 12, one topic that stood out to me above the rest was podcasts. I never realized the importance and significance podcasts hold in today's society. A podcast is an audio version of a vlog that involves recorded audio, but not video. Podcasts consist of multiple episodes, that normally discuss, debate and talk about different stories. There is a plethora of podcast formats. These formats consist of solo commentary, one-on-one interview, question and answer (Q&A), multi-host talk show, education driven, panel, narrative storytelling and fictional or nonfictional storytelling.

Podcasts are extremely popular in all aspects. As of 2023, there are over 5 million podcasts and more than 70 million episodes, that are also available in over 100 languages. One thing that surprised me, was the average age(s) of listeners. I was expecting the age to be between 15-20 years old, due to the recent uprising of podcasts. My thought process was that younger generations often are more up to date on technological trends. However, I very wrong as the average age of podcast consumers is 25-34 years.

Another interesting fact about podcasts, is that 80% of listeners listen to the entire episode. This is unordinary because of the short attention span viewers/listeners have grown to acquire through short videos that exert a dopamine release. For example, if you are scrolling on TikTok, you more than likely could scroll for hours and lose track of time. Another example, would be if you were to watch 5 videos, could you name all 5 of those? The answer is probably no. That is why this statistic that 80% of listeners listen to the entire episode is surprising.

In conclusion, podcasts have made a name for themselves in the social media and entertainment scenes. As of 2023, over 450 million people have listened to a podcast. Do you think that podcasts could eventually become bigger then television? How do you think podcasts differ from other forms of social media and entertainment?

  1. I feel like a couple years ago you never heard one person talk about some of the podcasts they listened to. Because I feel like they did not exist, and I did not start listening to them until recently. It is strange the uproar of podcasting content and the amount of listeners that are around now. I feel like I have a storter attention span but podcasts make you feel like you are there in the conversation with whoever is hoasting the podcast. I never knew how entertaining they could really be until I started listening. I think podcasting can make it seem like you are there compared to an Instagram reel where you are just watching.
