Social Media Audits and How they are Conducted

Social media audits are a crucial part of improving and analyzing professional and personal accounts. An audit in this specific industry can be defined as conducting a competitive assessment, a SWOT analysis and socially listening. According to our class textbook, social media listening or social listening is the process of monitoring the internet to determine what is said about a particular brand, topic or industry. Social media listening is very important in conducting a social media audit because knowing current trends and news is necessary to get the results.

There are a handful of necessary steps in order to fulfill the requirements of an audit. The first one is to determine which channels need monitoring including all networks, blog sites, apps, industry websites, review websites and more. The second step is creating a list of keywords to monitor. Some examples of these keywords would be company names (Apple), product names (iPhone), competitors and hot topics or trends in the industry. Next is to use these keywords to listen in on conversations revolving around the company, product or industry. Lastly, keep a tab on what is being said and remember what consumers say about the competition.

All in all, social media audits give a lot of results. These results can help you improve your social media content, resolve issues, become aware of what you are doing effectively and more. If you are not using social media audits to further advance your platforms especially as a company, I would highly recommend.

  1. I never realized how much actually went into doing a social media audit. The part that really stuck out to me was the keywords when listening. It's one thing to just search the brand name, but searching the products too is really smart.
